SDC in Zambia
Switzerland and Zambia have shared a strong and enduring partnership since the 1960s, grounded in a mutual commitment to sustainable development and improved quality of life for Zambians. Through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the two countries formalised a bilateral cooperation agreement in 2023, reinforcing Switzerland’s support across priority areas including agriculture and food security, health, governance, private sector development and humanitarian aid. These interventions have strengthened institutional capacities, broadened access to essential services, stimulated economic opportunity and bolstered community resilience nationwide.
In light of a 2025 review of Switzerland’s international cooperation budget, the Swiss Government has decided to progressively phase out its SDC-supported bilateral development programme in Zambia by 2028. This transition will be carried out in a structured and responsible manner, in close coordination with the Government of Zambia and key development partners, while fully respecting all existing commitments. Switzerland remains deeply invested in its relationship with Zambia and will continue to engage through climate finance, private sector partnerships, institutional collaboration and sustained diplomatic dialogue – ensuring that the partnership not only endures but evolves as a dynamic and forward-looking relationship beyond 2028.
